Royal Castle in Dobczyce
Dobczyce, Old Town
It is located on a hill above the Raba River, and more precisely on Lake Dobczyckie, which was created by damming up the waters of the Raba River. It is an example of an upland castle. Research conducted on the castle hill revealed traces of settlements from the Neolithic and Bronze Age. The period when the fortress was built dates back to the 13th century. The first written mention of it comes from 1225. In its heyday, the building had over 70 rooms and 3 towers. In the past, it hosted the crowned heads: Władysław Łokietek, Kazimierz the Great, Queen Jadwiga and Władysław Jagiełło. In the times of Kazimierz Jagiellończyk, an academy for the royal sons was located here, who were educated under the supervision of the famous Polish historian Jan Długosz. Today, in the reconstructed part, there is the Władysław Kowalski Regional Museum of PTTK.
